Tips for a Staycation

Everyone has a story on how Covid19 has effected them. Some people have had a work situation change, others have newborns they haven’t been able to travel to meet, and some have canceled their dream holiday. If you’re still craving the adventure and thrill of a great vacation, there’s still a great way to do that… a backyard staycation! Keep reading for our tips.

Tips for a fun staycation!

“A staycation, or holistay, is a period in which an individual or family stays home and participates in leisure activities within day trip distance of their home and does not require overnight accommodation.” – Wikipedia

Make an itinerary:

Have you ever been a tourist in your own backyard? Have you visited all the tourist spots? Treat your staycation like any other vacation and create an itinerary of all the places you want to visit, things you want to see and what you want to do. By creating a schedule you’ll be more likely to stick to it and less likely to lounge around at home. Ask your friends & family their favourite spots, Google your city, or check out a hashtag on Instagram for ideas. You might be surprised by what you find, for example in our backyard in Nelson (where SheShed NZ is based) we have a guinea pig village!

Unplug:

Being on a staycation with your home wifi available, you will need to make a conscious decision to unplug. Put down your phone, ipad, tablet, smart watch and laptop. On your staycation it’s just as important to take time out from your screens and recharge yourself.

Take photos:

Remember that itinerary you’ve made of awesome local tourist spots in your backyard? Be sure to take touristy photos. Any true holiday is full of family smiles, poses and activities. You’ll want to show off all the fun your family is having and remember the awesome staycation you had.

Treat yourself:

Nothing says vacation like a spa. Especially if you’ve spent days walking around checking out the sights. You’re not paying for a hotel, or travel, or expensive restaurants, so treat yourself to a nice massage, facial or sauna to truly relax.

Support local:

You are on a staycation at home, so technically you could cook every meal at home, but who wants to cook while on vacation? Go out for a big breakfast of pancakes with bacon and banana, and a giant latte. Try a new cafe for lunch, and treat yourself to a beautiful restaurant for dinner. If there’s somewhere you’ve always wanted to try, this is the perfect time. Find other ways to support local too. Is there a local business that offers guided walking tours? Or can you rent bikes and cycle around your city?

Create a special space at home:

Our final tip for your backyard staycation? Creating your own relaxing backyard retreat in a She Shed. Move your bed into the She Shed for a couple of nights and it will truly feel like you’re away from home.

If you’re dreaming of a beach vacation, style it with your favourite nautical themed items, then sit back in a lounger with a delicious Pina Colada. It will feel like you’re beach side in Honolulu!

Or maybe a luxury holiday is more your style? Some luxurious carpet and a stunning daybed will transport you to Paris.

It’ll be a space you’ll never want to leave, and your staycation will never have to end!
